My Garden - It's Complicated part 2

So here we are part 2..  My husband was nice enough to clear  a little space for me in the back of our garden.  (Note the ugly wall)  We really need some help out here but that is for another series of posts.  I decided to use this space between the apple tree and the white birch simply because it gets some shade in the afternoon.  I know that veggies are supposed to get full sun but in the summer here it gets so hot in the afternoon I am afraid that things would burn up.  So now that I have a spot I must begin to build my little raised planter.

Supplies:
  • I bought the wood at Home Depot and had them cut it in the store for me so I was ready to go when I got back.
  • Weed blocker
  • Stakes
  • Organic Soil
  • News paper (had to borrow this - we don't get the paper)
  • Nails/Hammer or screws/drill

So I put this thing together by laying out the weed blocker first and then built it on top of that.  I opted for the hammer and nail approach, because my hands are not strong enough to get the screws in at that angle.

I put in the stakes and the news paper (I am not sure of the newspapers purpose but that is what I was told to do).  The bed is only 6" high so I am not planting a lot of carrots in there but this was to see if I could even grow anything.  Next to fill this baby with dirt.  I bought organic soil (5-6 bags),  a batch of organic compost from my worm composter and a bag of organic potting soil.

Now you are ready to plant your goodies..

This was hard for me.  I really had to think of what my family would actually eat and I wanted it to look pretty.  I know it is a little box jammed up against the wall in the back of my garden but I imagined so much more you know.  A beautiful raised bed potager garden.. with flowers veggies and herbs.. So onto what we actually planted.

  • Strawberries
  • basil
  • marigolds
  • iceland poppies
  • brocoli
  • onions
  • artichoks
  • thyme
  • nasturtiums
  • green beans
  • various lettuces from seed

Down the way a bit we also planted additional strawberries under our fruit trees and blueberry bushes.

So we are hopeful to have a lot of wonderful meals with fresh food from our new garden.  It has been a while and I will give you updates periodically on how we are doing.  I would love to hear what you are growing...???

Mr. Brown's Patent etching

Here is another vintage piece.  This one reads "Mr. Brown's Patent".  The drawing on this piece is a bit lighter but very nice and very detailed...  They make a great pair..  Find this one on our Etsy site also.

Vintage Scientific magazine etching...

This is a great piece from I believe around 1750. It is a single sheet from a scientific magazine of the day. The graphics are really nice and pronounced. A wonderful piece for the office or the home... love this! I just posted this on Etsy..

Vintage updates... Long Beach Flea Market Vintage bridge print

So I know it has been close to a month since my visit to Long Beach and my post about all of the fantabluous things I found..  Here is a little update though.  A few things are still in progress but here is one finished piece...

I picked this piece up (along with a few others) last month for myself and I am so happy with the way that it came out.  I have a thing for vintage drawings, documents and etchings.  I don't know exactly where this baby will be going but I will keep you posted!

Ramos House Cafe San Juan Capistrano

Recently I met a friend for lunch at The Ramos House Cafe and was so pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was relaxing and fresh. The food was fantastic too. I highly recommend it! They are located on Los Rios Street in San Juan Capistrano just across the railroad tracks. This is one of my favorite locations (we had our wedding pictures taken back there). Please enjoy for me!  Be sure to arrive early for lunch as it fills up quickly!

I want to say thank you everyone at SEED for how wonderful they have been to me!  I am closing my space there as of the end of April.  I would love to stay on but I have become so busy with Design projects and blogging that I am not able to give it my best.  I love the store and I love hearing about all of my customers!

Anthropologie Earth Day Our way.... Children's potting workshop

Over the weekend we took the kids to breakfast and needed to stop by Anthropologie to pick up a book I wanted. It just so happened that they had started their Earth Day celebrations! The kids got a chance to pot a tomato plant to take home and personalize their bags. How cute is that? The girls were very sweet as always and the kids were thrilled!

What will you be doing/teaching your kids on this coming Earth day? It is the 40th Earth Day celebration...

Vintage trophies display - Green Design

I think that displaying collections in your home is the best way to personalize it and enjoy it!  If you tuck away your collections what fun are they.  Display what makes you happy!  Either in a grouping or spread out they make wonderful accents and conversation pieces.  It is also such a great gift to have vintage items in your home it gives it a feeling of life!

Visit our Etsy site for various vintage items!  Some of my favorites are the vintage trophies and cameras!

My Garden - It's Complicated part 1

After seeing the move It's Complicated not only did I want to move into her house I wanted to get my hands on that Garden!  The garden in the movie is not realistic I realize that, however I wanted to have something special too.  A Potager garden.   My yard is a mess literally!  We moved into our house 2 years ago last month and I have not been able to do much around here.  When we bought our new house we had big dreams- they included a pool and a lot of other amenities, and here it sets almost completely untouched.  Our yard is bigger than most for Southern California so it has a lot of potential however more space seems to mean more money...

So with all of that I decided to start small.  I wanted to see if I could grow something- well grow anything that is.  I am good with flowers but since our move here my success has been limited.  I decided to make myself a small raised planter and get to growing.

I am so excited to share my garden with you (although it really is not much) and I hope this will encourage me to do more!  Maybe even tear out some of the grass and really spread out..  We shall see.

Stay tuned for part 2 of My Garden - It's complicated....

Thank you to Natalie for getting my excited and inspiring me to stop talking and start doing!

Vintage bottles on your table

This is such a wonderful way to keep the flowers small and intimate on the table.  Using the vintage bottles is so much fun!
